Philanthropy has long funded medical research, with profound impacts - from developing vaccines to the Cochlear implant. Many of our research institutes were initiated by philanthropic grants. But the way we think about health has changed since Ken Myer, Ian Potter and Dr H. C. 'Nugget' Coombs created the Howard Florey Institute back in 1958. While we are still highly dependent on research to understand disease, and create drugs and therapies to combat illness and injuries, the focus in 2010 is increasingly on a more holistic view of wellbeing. Is is appropriate for philanthropy to take a wider approach to funding health? And what support is there for prevention, epidemiology, and global health issues? This issue of Australian Philanthropy opens the doors on philanthropic support for health, wellbeing and medical research philanthropy.
