With cheque-book philanthropy firmly out of favour these days, measuring outcomes and impact is high on the philanthropic (and not-for-profit) agenda. Museums are spending 10% of their operational budget on evaluating the user experience so they are prepared for donor questions, and measuring return on investment is part of the landscape. However several philanthropy commentators are ringing warning bells about what Bruce Sievers calls 'The holy grail of impact' (in his article in Alliance magazine, March 2010.) What does current evaluation practice look like, and what are the risks in demanding high-impact philanthropy? In this issue of Australian Philanthropy we explore social accounting and SROI, and ask how they compare to traditional evaluation.
