Overview

Statistical data on giving in Australia is difficult to obtain and is not comprehensive as surveys are carried out only intermittently.

The Giving Australia report published in October 2005 estimates the giving of money, goods and services to nonprofit organisations by individuals and businesses to total $11 billion per year, which excludes giving in response to the 2004 Tsunami crisis in late 2004/early 2005). This giving is comprised of:

  • $7.7 billion from individuals - 13.4 million people, or 87% of adult Australians, in the year to January 2005.
  • $3.2 billion from 525,900 businesses, or 67% of all businesses in the 2003-04 financial year.

Giving by Individuals

The most reliable data comes from the Australian Taxation Office; however, this is a record of tax deductible donations made by individuals. It does not include donations to organisations which are not DGRs, nor does it include donations or grants made by companies or foundations. The ATO data is published in fact sheet form each year by the Centre on Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at Queensland University of Technology.

Giving by Companies

The Giving Australia report published in October 2005 estimated total business giving in 2004 to be $3.2 billion from 525,900 businesses, or 67% of all businesses in the 2003-04 financial year.

The Business Council of Australia (BCA) released a report in February 2004 which detailed the contribution made by its membership of 100 leading corporations to the community. The report, The Community of Business, found that BCA Member companies contributed:

  • Approximately $220 million and over 200,000 staff hours on social and community programs across Australia
  • $290 million and 425 000 staff hours on environmental projects

Giving by Foundations

Foundation giving is the most difficult to quantify, because Australian foundations are not legally required to report on their activities and disbursements. Philanthropy Australia collects some information from foundations which provide annual reports or dollar amounts, and estimates that total foundation giving stands at between half a billion and one billion dollars Australian per annum.
