The BDO Kendalls Not-for-profit Fraud Survey is intended to provide a benchmark for not-for-profit organisations in understanding the risks associated with fraud and how organisations are fighting those risks.
Some key findings of the 2008 survey include:
- Of those organisations that responded, 16% had suffered a fraud in the previous two years.
- The largest number of frauds reported occured in organisations turning over between $1 million and $10 million, in organisations with 51-100 employees, and in organisations with no volunteers.
- Cash theft and kickbacks/bribery were the most common types of fraud perpetrated.
- Organisations believe that the key factors required to reduce the risk of fraud are strong internal contraols (74%) and an ethical organisational culture.
