This Australian Bureau of Statistics report examines the size, income, expenses, surplus, staffing and volunteers of the not-for-profit sector, with breakdowns by type of organisation.
It is important to note that in this survey the ABS used a different criteria for 'not-for-profit' than is used by some other organisations, meaning that the figures are different to those presented by other surveys. In particular, the ABS has concentrated on only organisations with an ABN, and those which have a turnover higher than a set threshold.
Amongst the report's findings:
- Using the ABS' criteria, there are 40,976 not-for-profit organisations in Australia
- Religious organisations make up 21.3% of not-for-profit organisations
- Art and culture organisations make up 20% of not-for-profit organisations
- Not-for-profit organisations employed 884,476 people at the end of June 2007; 27.2%of these were employed in social services organisations, followed by educational organisations with 24.4% of employees
- Not-for-profit organisations used 2,434,815 volunteers during 2006-07
- Not-for-profit organisations received $74.5b in income in the 2006-07 financial year
- 34.1% of this income was from Federal, state and local governments
- 28.6% was fee-for-service income
- Donations, sponsorship and fundraising accounted for 9.4% of total income
- 9.2% of income was from sales of goods
