Ageing Futures Overview

Ageing Futures refers to the ageing of Australia's population as the proportion of Australians aged over 65 years increases greatly over the next decades.

Statistics

  • In 2005, 312,000 Australians were aged 85 and over — equivalent to 1.5 per cent of the population.
  • By 2055 this will rise to over 1.6 million people or 6 per cent of the population
  • Over the next 20 years, the number of Australians who are 70 and over will grow at a rate 3.3 times faster than the growth of total population.
